George Husaruk – Artistic Director and Conductor
George Husaruk serves as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir. A versatile musician and educator, George brings decades of experience as a performer, teacher, and conductor.
Born into a Ukrainian musical family, George began studying violin at age six with his older brother Eugene, who later became concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. A year later he transitioned to recorder and then flute, studying at the Royal Conservatory of Music at McGill University with renowned teacher Mario Duschenes. After moving to Los Angeles as a teenager, George continued his classical flute studies with distinguished teachers including George Drexler of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the legendary Jean-Pierre Rampal.
While attending UCLA, George expanded his musical interests into jazz and contemporary music, performing with a number of jazz artists including Cal Tjader and later opening for Chris Botti. Throughout his musical career, however, conducting remained a central passion.
George has more than 25 years of experience conducting and teaching middle and high school bands and choirs in California. Since moving to Nevada County in 2019 with his wife, Katharine Elliott, he has become deeply involved in the local music community. In addition to directing the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir, he serves as conductor of the Grass Valley Symphony Orchestra (formerly known as OLLI Orchestra) and the Lake Wildwood Women’s Chorus and performs with several local ensembles.
Known for his engaging and encouraging leadership style, George is passionate about bringing people together through music and inspiring singers and audiences alike.
