Long before Nevada County was what it is today, Cornish miners gathered to sing. After long days underground, they raised their voices together — building community, strength, and belonging through music.
That tradition lives on in the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir.
We honor our Cornish heritage while singing a wide variety of music, including Broadway, spirituals, folk, pop, and contemporary selections. What matters most isn’t perfection, but the joy of singing together.
Who We’re Looking For
The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir welcomes men who love to sing and enjoy being part of a community.
You may be a great fit if you:
- Love to sing (or used to sing)
- Can carry a tune and sing a part
- Enjoy camaraderie and fellowship
- Want to be part of something meaningful and local
Prior choral experience and the ability to read music are helpful, but not required. Many of our members have learned and grown musically through their time in the choir.
More than anything, we value a willingness to participate, learn, and share in the joy of making music together.
What to Expect
Joining the choir is designed to be welcoming and low-pressure.
Rather than formal auditions, we begin with:
- A brief check of your vocal range to help place you comfortably
- An informal orientation period of 3–4 regular rehearsals
During this time, you’ll get to know the music, the men, and the rhythm of rehearsals, while the Director has an opportunity to get to know your voice. At the end of this period, we meet privately to decide together whether the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir is a good fit for you and the group.
Rehearsals, Commitment & Practical Details
The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir is built on shared commitment and mutual respect. Members are asked to participate fully and support the success of the group.
- Rehearsals are held Thursday evenings, 5:00–7:00 PM, in Grass Valley
- Members are expected to attend rehearsals and concerts regularly
- A typical year includes two seasonal concerts, along with occasional community performances
- Some individual practice at home is expected to learn music and lyrics
- Singers are asked to arrive prepared, on time, and ready to contribute to a focused and respectful rehearsal environment
Annual dues are $100, which are optional during your first year.
Concert jackets and polo shirts are provided.
Members also assist with concert ticket sales and community engagement.
Additional details regarding uniforms, travel, and other logistics are shared with members during orientation.
More Than a Choir
The Grass Valley Male Voice Choir is both a musical and a social group.
While we take pride in our performances, we also value the friendships that grow through rehearsals, concerts, and time spent together. Many of our members find that the camaraderie is just as meaningful as the music.
Rooted in Cornish tradition, our repertoire spans heritage songs and a wide range of music — including Broadway, spirituals, folk, pop, and contemporary selections.

This spring, the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir returns to the music that shaped our beginnings — honoring the rich tradition of men’s choral singing rooted in Cornwall, while celebrating the wide-ranging repertoire that defines our choir today.
